I was especially impressed by how the camera could count apples on a tree at such a fast rate. At the time, they were driving around 10 km per hour and counting between 100 and 200 apples per tree, with trees only about four feet apart. Even in the first year, the accuracy was quite good. As the years progressed, it became even more precise—now reaching a level comparable to manually counting every apple on each tree, but nearly 100 times faster.
Over the past few years, we’ve recommended this technology to other growers in our area and to growers across other apple-producing regions around the world. I’ve spoken with many growers globally about other manufacturers offering similar equipment, and almost everyone agrees that Vivid Machines’ equipment and software are superior. The equipment is durable, reasonably priced, and backed by excellent customer service.
Tree fruit growing is highly labor-intensive, and gross income per acre can vary dramatically from poor crops to exceptional ones. Vivid Machines’ technology helps growers optimize crop load to achieve the best possible returns. Each variety—and even each block within an orchard—requires a different number of apples per tree to maximize profitability.
Vivid Machines doesn’t just count apples; it can also count apple blossoms and fruit buds. The earlier a grower knows how many potential apples are on a tree, the sooner they can make adjustments—such as pruning more limbs or thinning more fruit—which leads to better fruit sizing and overall outcomes.
There is tremendous potential for what this technology can do in the near future.
